The assignment to write and assess a collaborative task was the most challenging one for me. I write prompts all the time, but I generally don’t spend much time on them. I like that this assignment encouraged me to provide more information to my students before having them do the work. It was also challenging to me because I have not approached collaboration in this way before.
I modified an existing assignment to be a collaborative task. In one of our literacy units, we have a simulation where students get to be English colonists getting ready to sail for the New World. This started as a group project of sorts, but thanks to this assignment, has become a truly collaborative one. Colonies/groups must include ideas and feedback from every member and the group must work together to come up with unifying ideas for their new colony. The first task for the group is to design a flag for their colony following specific guidelines provided in the assignment prompt. After creating their flag design, individuals journal on their Weebly blog and respond to writing prompts to describe their flag and their colony. Similar to what we are asked to do in our weekly discussions, students then respond to at least two other students’ blog entries. I am excited to lead my students through this activity next year now that it has been revamped and improved into something more meaningful than the original!

The Cooperative Web Tools Rubric assignment for Module 2 was one of the most useful from this course. It forced me to think deeply and rationally about how to choose the best tech tool for collaborative assignments. Now that I have created a rubric I will have a way to make sure that a tech tool really is the best one for the job.
Up until this course, when choosing a tech tool I would have played around with it on my own to get a feel for it and made sure it matched up with what I wanted my students to get out of it. While those are still important things to confirm, the rubric assignment helped guide me to think about more than just the outcome:
